I have created a Wiki called "Can you be successful only being good?" this links to my inquiry that I have been concentrating on - JACK OF ALL TRADES MASTER OF NONE.
Hey Stacey. I've been thinking about the idea of being versatile or being specialised a lot lately. I'm investigating musical theatre training where usually the preconceived notion is that you need to be a 'triple threat' Yu need to be as versatile as possible because all disciplines are expected of you. Is this the best way to get performers work though?
I was at an audition for Chess the other day and the first round was a ballet call. My ballet is pretty good, I was in the top set at college, but I am not a ballet dancer. I am not specialised in it. At this audition there were boys there who were fabulous ballet dancers, much better than me, and so they were kept and I was cut. Fair enough. It did make me think though that what is the point of being versatile if the you a kicked out before the panel have a chance to see it? It all very well saying that you increase the number of jobs you can audition for by being versatile but what happens if you each time you get there there is someone who is specilaised in that discipline and therefore much better than you? Perhaps it is better to decide exactly what you want to be, work hard at it and stick to it?
